The Use of Concentration Camps
The first concentration camps in Germany were established soon after Hitler's appointment as chancellor in January 1933. As many people know, these concentration camps were "death camps," used by Hitler to eradicate the Jewish race. These camps were the start of the Holocaust, and the deaths of more than 11 million Jewish people, Gypsies, etc.
Concentration camps were used to incarcerate mainly Jewish people in Europe. The camp system was complex and was made up like so "labor camps; prisoner of war camps; transit camps; and camps which served as killing centers, often called extermination camps or death camps." Living conditions in either of these camps were terrible. But it wasn't just the living conditions. The Nazi’s didn't show mercy, and many of the people in the camps were mistreated.
There were many concentration camps during the Holocaust but the most famous camp was called Auschwitz. It was the largest concentration camp during the time, and included 3 main camps, all which incarcerated prisoners at forced labor. One of the camps was also used as a killing center, and as you might already know, was made up of gas chambers and crematoriums. The three camps were known as: Auschwitz I; Aushwitz-Birkenau; and Auschwitz-Monowitz.

Killing Machines
In concentration camps, prisoners were treated unfairly at a horrifying manner. They were given small rations of food, and at times no food at all. They were put in rooms small rooms, filled with many unkown people, where they could sleep. There were many rules these prisoners had to follow, but even if they were followed, the SS soldiers would treat the people unfairly at their own will. Some concentration camps served as labor camps, and others as killing centers. Killing centers were places where the Nazis would kill many Jewish people that seemed weak or already dead. Many women and children were sent to these killing centers immediately. The methods Nazis used to kill large numbers of people were crematoriums and gas chambers. In gas chambers, large numbers of people were put in a metal room, where a Nazi soldier would drop carbon monoxide gas on the people, to choke and kill them. Crematoriums were places where people were cremated (or burned).
